In other words: One morning I woke up and the sofa was filled with balloons and my boyfriend and I had been together for five years. We were going to Scotland to celebrate – that was our present to each other – and we started the day by eating an empty-the-fridge breakfast. After a few hours of packing and other preparations necessary before going on vacation for nine days, we went out into the sunshine. We decided to have have a big diner lunch, because travelling always takes a lot out of you. I like atmospheric eateries, and the food and (bottomless!) coffee at Nighthawk is really good. Afterwards we left summery Oslo for the airport, where I love being because of the anticipation in the air, and the place was even decorated with clouds at the time. How cute! My boyfriend and I had a beer after checking in our suitcase, because that’s a tradition in my family. (We sent an MMS to my parents, who were pleased and said bon voyage.) On the plane we read in our travel book (the summary on the back was a little disappointing, but anything can happen, we thought). Furthermore we shared a bar of chocolate which said «congratulations!» and which I was actually given for my birthday a while earlier, but was very appropriate on this occasion also. Then we flew in over the straight Scottish coast, and when we landed in Edinburgh, the evening light was soft and the stone houses were as pretty as I had hoped. We checked in to the Caledonian Guesthouse, which I can recommend, although they don’t have a website. It is located in a nice, calm area, and the rooms are spacious and newly renovated. There was even a sweet surprise on the bed! My boyfriend and I was so happy to look out on a whole new city that evening. That was how our first day ended and how our trip began!
